What is ?

It is an integral framework to use lifelong throughout your career to:
  • review and identify the knowledge needs of your current practice, and then honestly assess the gaps that exist in your knowledge;
  • create a plan to fulfill the knowledge / skills gaps;
  • implement the plan by undertaking the necessary learning; and
  • evaluate and review the impact of the CPD on your practice.

    As the South Australian ENRICH program states: "research tells us that learning is most useful to a professional when the professional selects their own particular needs, chooses their own preferred learning style to gain knowledge and then decides how to apply the knowledge."

    follows a process similar to a quality assurance cycle:

    STEP 1 - Reflect on your current practice, review your competencies and describe areas that need improvement
    STEP 2 - Formulate a plan to meet your needs
    STEP 3 - Implement your plan and document your progress
    STEP 4 - Evaluate and review your activities to determine whether desired outcomes have been achieved

    Australia's national competency standards for pharmacists are a valuable tool to assist in step 1. SHPA has identified templates for seven role / service definition grids based on the national competency standards for Australian pharmacists for the practice of pharmacy in the hospital and other settings:
  • hospital pharmacist with a general/multiple task role. Click here to download a copy (members only)
  • hospital pharmacist with a clinical role. Click here to download a copy (members only)
  • drug information pharmacist. Click here to download a copy (members only)
  • project pharmacist. Click here to download a copy (members only)
  • hospital pharmacist with a management role. Click here to download a copy (members only)
  • community practice. Click here to download a copy (members only)
  • hospital pharmacy technician. Click here to download a copy (members only)

    You may want to add detail from Competency Standards for Pharmacists in Australia (Click here to download a copy) to a template OR you may want to condense some detailed sections. If you wish you can produce your own role / service definition grid by customising the generic role / service definition grid document (Click here to download a copy) (members only) and deleting the sections the least applicable to your practice as a pharmacist (for example choosing the detailed or summarised version of each competency unit).

    The activity record sheet and the summary record have been developed to help you work through and record these steps. They can also be used to meet the audit requirements of pharmacy boards.

    You should develop a personal folio to retain:
  • original activity record sheets;
  • any attendance certificates that were provided;
  • copy of summary record (original submitted to pharmacy board);
  • any relevant documentation of your planning process;

    The activity groups have developed to provide a framework for the wide range of activities that are available to pharmacists to assist in creating your plan. The model outlines three levels of activity:

    Group 1 - INFORMATION DELIVERY - without assessment (e.g. attending a conference)
    Group 2 - IMPROVING KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS - with assessment (e.g. exams or question and answer activities)
    Group 3 - TOWARDS FACILITATING CHANGE - undertaking an activity that that facilitates practice change (e.g. a quality improvement activity, or undertaking a drug use evaluation).

    It is also possible to take a Group 1 or 2 activity e.g. attending a conference and use it to achieve a higher level of outcome. You may listen to a paper and act on this to make a change back in your work practice.

    SHPA will provide a range of products and services to all members to help meet the requirements of and remain

  • current - many knowledge services including face-to-face lectures, CE on CE disk, clinical seminars, journal articles to keep up to date, credentials for medication management reviews
  • informed - via practice standards or guidelines, bulletins, conferences, journal re new policies and services, pharmacy practice changes
  • connected - with opportunities to join email discussion groups, network with peers, role models and mentors, leadership roles via branches, specialty practice

    Accredited programs
    SHPA will still accredit programs on request and give an indication of suggested hours that can be claimed. In many cases, the hours may be in excess of the maximum claimable for each activity group above. However, members are still encouraged to record all of their CPD activities, not just those required to meet the yearly target of 30 hours. If hours are not suggested for activities, then members should make their own assessments, based on their pre-identified learning objectives.

    Non-accredited programs
    There will inevitably be a range of activities that you undertake from other providers, where it is impossible for SHPA or others to accredit them in advance. This does not exclude them as appropriate activities to achieve your plan. However, members should reflect on the activity and ensure that it will deliver aims and objectives at an appropriate standard to meet learning needs - see the booklet for more information.

    > Completing 2007 using current system

    The SHPA CPD Program (introduced in late 1990's) was designed to allow maximum flexibility in the manner that CPD requirements are satisfied.

    Each year, the CPD activity record sheet must be returned to the SHPA Federal Secretariat prior to, or with the annual membership renewal payment (due by 1 July each year). Members who demonstrate a commitment to professional development through CPD continuing education, subject to the approval of the relevant registering authority, will be entitled to use the post-nominal designation of Certified Hospital Pharmacist (CHP). CPD status will be noted on the SHPA membership card which is issued annually to all members at the time of membership renewal.
