The UMDI is one of the first USA based Drug Information Services to be available/accessible on the WWW. It was the first service of its kind to actually accept questions from users of the internet via electronic form.

The service acts as post-graduate training site for PharmD graduates who desire to specialize in Drug Information Practice. The UMDI is one-third of the School of Pharmacy's Informational Services department which also contains the Office of Substance Abuse Studies and The Maryland Poison Center.

Ongoing collaborative efforts with outside organizations make it possible for the UMDI to maintain a 'free' service to all patrons.

The UMDI is also involved in all aspects of formulary management at the University of Maryland Medical System, which houses the area's regional trauma center, pediatric hospital, tertiary care facility, and a major cancer center.
