The Research and Development Grants Advisory Committee recently relocated from NSW under the Chairmanship of Helen Dowling to SA under the Chairmanship of Anna McClure. View list of current committee members.
The Research & Development Grants Advisory Committee (RDGAC) appreciate that it can be quite a daunting prospect to apply for a grant for the first time. After seeking membership feedback several new initatives have been introduced.
Mentor Program
A register has been developed to encourage an informal exchange of ideas between members, those that have a track record in research and those that are just starting out. We already have some members prepared to assist their colleagues but are always looking for those with varied experiences.

Rural Grants
The DBL Development Fund provides $5000 for up to 10 members from rural and remote areas to attend the SHPA Clinical Pharmacy seminars.

Abbott Pharmacy Research Grant
This grant of up to $10,000 is designed to promote innovation over a wide range of hospital pharmacy-related activities. Areas of investigation might include, but are not restricted to:
Management practices contributing to the advancement of hospital pharmacy services.
Research to identify, measure and compare the clinical and economic benefits of hospital pharmacy services.

Baxter NW Naismith Management Grant **NEW closing date**
This grant has been established in recognition of the contribution of Neil W Naismith to hospital pharmacy practice.
The recipient will travel internationally to undertake programs of study and project development with individuals who are prominent leaders in hospital pharmacy management or within their national pharmaceutical organisations. Associated with the study program will be an opportunity to attend a relevant professional meeting such as FIP, ASHP Midyear Clinical or Annual Meeting or other meetings, the purpose of which will be to advance the nominated field of study. All costs of travel, accommodation and conference registration up to a maximum of $10,000 will be met by the Grant. Applicants are required to be currently employed in an Australian hospital in a position with management responsibilities.

DBL Development Fund
In 2008 the DBL Development Fund will provide $40,000 to assist SHPA members undertake:
research projects
development activities such as attendance at conferences, seminars, study tours.

DBL Development Fund Travel Assistance
The SHPA Research and Development Grants Advisory Committee (RDGAC) will be considering the provision of financial assistance to SHPA members wishing to attend the 34th SHPA National Conference, Adelaide September 2008.
Funding is strictly limited to
TRAVEL costs only, and
NOMINATED presenters of posters/papers, or members participating in a session of the conference e.g. chairing/judging a session, assisting in running a workshop, and
MEMBERS who have 12 months current membership with SHPA, or in the case of student members (including pre-registrant/trainee members), three months current membership as at 30 May 2008.

DBL Development Young Pharmacists Award
Up to $10,000 is open to a pharmacist member of SHPA with 10 years or less
experience.
It is for an International Preceptorship only
The successful pharmacist will have the opportunity to spend time overseas to share ideas
and knowledge with the preceptor/s of their choice

EBEWE Pharma Oncology Pharmacy Grants
$20,000 is available in 2008. The grant comprises of two parts.
Research Grant(s) totalling $10,000
and Travel Grant(s) totalling $10,000.
The grants are designed to offer support for a wide range of research and professional development activities in oncology pharmacy or oncology pharmacy management. Activities can include, but are not limited to: international study tours; preceptorships; international and local travel to relevant conferences; and research projects specifically in relation to oncology pharmacy practice. Applicants must be working or teaching in the field of oncology or managing a unit that provides oncology pharmacy service.

Janssen-Cilag Specialist Renal Pharmacist Grants
Two grants of $5,000 are available each year to provide two pharmacists working in the area of renal medicine to take part in a one-week visit to another hospital, with the preceptor of their choice. Alternatively, the applicant may invite a preceptor to visit the renal unit in which they work, for a one-week period. The grant is designed to cover the cost of travel, accommodation and locum costs.

Merck Sharp & Dohme Pharmacy Postgraduate Study Grants
$10,000 is available to SHPA members in 2008 to assist pharmacists to undertake postgraduate study. Up to $5000 will be available per applicant to assist with the payment of fees, including examination fees and the cost of attending examinations. Grants are exclusive of GST. Courses that would be considered for this award include postgraduate studies relevant to the applicant's practice in hospital pharmacy.

Pfizer Pharmacy Grant
One grant of $10,000 or two grants of up to $5,000 each will be made available to members of the Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia. The grants are designed to enable the successful applicant(s) to attend a relevant national or international conference or undertake a preceptorship in their chosen therapeutic area.

Roche Research Grant on Quality and Safety
This grant valued at $10,000 is designed to enable a project to be undertaken in the areas of quality and safety in medicines use. Suitable projects would demonstrate the impact of hospital pharmacy on medicines management in terms of quality, safety, and, where relevant, the economic benefit. Applications should be submitted on a SHPA Research Grant Application Form and include a statement (not more than 500 words) relating to the benefits associated with the completion of the project in terms of improved use of medicines, the impact on the hospital/hospital pharmacy and any economic benefits derived from the project.

Sanofi-aventis Pamela Nieman Continuum of Care Research Grant 2008
This grant of up to $10,000 will enable members to undertake specific research into processes and outcomes that optimise medication management across the health care continuum, and in particular research in the important area of venous thromboembolism (VTE). The research should commence during 2008 and should focus on optimising the development and implementation of education and/or intervention strategies to facilitate improved continuity of care in the area of VTE management. The research should highlight the role of the pharmacist in this important therapeutic area. Members applying for this grant should use the SHPA Research Project Grant Application Form.

There are many opportunities for hospital pharmacy practitioners to seek funding from sources outside of the SHPA Grants Program. Some examples are listed below.
Information on grant funding sources are available through a number of avenues such as research offices in teaching hospitals, advertisements in national newspapers and websites of funding bodies. Also most universities maintain a research section in their University website. Many provide access to the Australian Competitive Grants Register - a list of funding schemes available from Commonwealth Government as well as non-Commonwealth sources. Members are encouraged to use these resources to access information on other grant opportunities.
Pharmacists Board of Queensland $250k research grants
The Pharmacists Board of Queensland research grants program aims to provide funding to Queensland pharmacists to promote and encourage research activity and research-based practice in the profession. Annual funding of up to $250,000 will support research activities with the potential to contribute significantly to improved pharmacy practice and health outcomes in Queensland.

National Breast Cancer Foundation
National Collaborative Breast Cancer Research Grant Program
National Collaborative Breast Cancer Research Grant Program is designed to foster wide collaboration between groups of investigators and pooling of knowledge, expertise and resources to enable larger scale or accelerated research programs into the prevention, causes, treatment or management of breast cancer. Funding is available for two projects of $1 million dollars per annum each, for up to 5 years, with the possibility of one renewal

Multiple Sclerosis Research Foundation
Investigator Initiated Project Grants
The grants support research relevant to multiple sclerosis in universities, hospitals or other recognised research institutions. Grants up to 2 years.

Diabetes Australia Research Trust (DART) Research Grants
Established by Diabetes Australia in 1987, the Diabetes Australia Research Trust (DART) supports and develops the field of diabetes research in Australia through providing funding towards the prevention, management and cure for diabetes, as well as enabling and fostering young and upcoming researchers in diabetes research.

One year funding for high quality basic and clinical research at a national level. No individual grant amounts set (grants in 2006 were in
the region of $50-$70,000).

Research Development Grants are offered by National Health And Medical Research Council (NHMRC).
Clinical Neurosciences research grants are offered by the Brain Foundation.
Research funding into Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Alzheimer's disease is available from J. O. & J. R. Wicking Trust.
Research funding into Arthritis is available from Arthritis Australia.
Funding for clinical research into cardiovascular disease or related therapeutic areas is available through the Pfizer CVL Research Grants.
