Salary & Conditions
Superannuation. The Queensland Government contributes up to 12.5 per cent of your annual salary value to superannuation. Personal contributions may vary between two and five per cent. You will be a member in QSuper Accumulation plans or the QSuper Defined Benefit plan. See www.qsuper.qld.gov.au Q-Super for more information.
Professional Development. Advancement through the professional stream encourages individuals to progress from entry level as a pre registration trainee pharmacist at Professional Officer 2, Level 1 (PO2.1). PO6 positions are at the top of the professional stream and normally apply to Pharmacy Directors in larger establishments.
Clinical Advancement. Pharmacists within Queensland Health also access a clinical career pathway through the Allied Health Conditional Clinical Advancement Scheme. The Allied Health Conditional Clinical Advancement Scheme is a state-wide process of promoting Queensland Health's highest performing Allied Health employees regardless of geographic location, organisational structure and work unit size. Through the scheme, eligible allied health employees are able to progress to the PO4, PO5 and PO6 levels based on advanced clinical skill and ability. The Allied Health Conditional Clinical Advancement Scheme is evidence of Queensland Health's commitment to ongoing training and education of its workforce and to the recognition of advanced clinical skills. Applications for advancement are invited in July each year.
Cumulative Sick Leave. Queensland Health employees are entitled to 10 working days sick leave, with a cumulative balance. Part-time employees accrue at a pro rata rate.
Annual Leave. Pharmacists employed in Queensland Health public hospitals receive four weeks recreation leave per year. Part-time staff accrue annual leave at a pro rata rate. Queensland Health pays a generous leave loading of 17.5% of your entitled recreation leave.
Parental Leave. Up to 52 weeks' maternity/adoption leave can be taken by permanent Queensland Health employees, with temporary employees entitled to leave calculated relative to their end-date of employment. Six weeks' paid maternity/adoption leave, able to be taken as 12 weeks half-pay, is available for Queensland Health staff with 12 months employment. In addition, spousal leave of up to one week on full pay is available to eligible employees.
Study Leave Contributions. Queensland Health's Study and Research Assistance Scheme (SARAS) helps employees to pursue courses of study or research projects. Staff are eligible for SARAS assistance if the course of study or research undertaken helps them to perform their job better, or if it generally contributes to the achievement of the Department's goals.
Salary Entitlements .
Queensland Health offers competitive salary entitlements.
Salaries for Pharmacists from September 2008 will fall within the following ranges:
HP 3: $50,145 - $76,005
HP 4: $81,303 - $87,481
HP 5: $91,971 - $95,962
HP 6: $102,470 - $106,070
HP 7: $116,721 - $125,088
On top of the base salary, remuneration will also include the ability to salary sacrifice (limited in some situations - see Salary Sacrificing Opportunities), 12.5% superannuation, 17.5% leave loading, 4 weeks annual leave and cumulative sick leave, parental leave, long service leave, shift and on-call allowances.
Salary Sacrificing Opportunities. Queensland Health employees working in a public hospital have access to attractive salary packaging arrangements. This may include use of the Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) exemption of up to $17,000 grossed up total value per annum on items that normally attract FBT. This allows employees working in eligible areas to deduct some of their pre tax income to pay for benefits such as, mortgage repayments, car parking, and many other items usually subject to FBT from your pre- taxed income, reducing the amount of tax you are required to pay and increasing the amount you take home each fortnight (approximately $4500 after tax per annum).

Information for Pharmacists Outside Queensland or Australia
Pharmacists registered in another Australian state or territory or in New Zealand are eligible for registration to practise in Queensland under mutual recognition.
The Australian Pharmacy Council (APC) and its committee the Australian Pharmacy Examining Council (APEC) have announced a revised recognition process for overseas-trained pharmacists seeking registration in Australia.
APEC has been assessing the competencies of pharmacists seeking the right to practise in Australia for many years. However, pharmacists from the UK and Ireland have been exempt from that process under longstanding reciprocal arrangements between the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland and state pharmacy registering authorities.
From 1 December 2006, all overseas-trained pharmacists, irrespective of their country of origin, will be required to be assessed for competency to practise in Australia by undertaking a formal APEC process. Go to the APC website for contact details and more information.
A new modified process will be introduced for eligible holders of qualifications from the UK, Ireland, USA and Canada. This will be a shortened process involving a new examination to be known as the Competency Assessment of Overseas Pharmacists (CAOP), a minimum period of four weeks supervised practice in Australia and a national examination of pharmacy law and ethics. Pharmacists from other countries will continue to be assessed by the current process, which includes formal examinations, longer periods of supervised practice and a final assessment of competency.
All pharmacists seeking to practise in Australia will be required to establish their good standing in each jurisdiction in which they have been registered over the preceding ten years.
New Zealand pharmacists will continue to be exempt from APEC requirements unless they require skills assessment for migration purposes.
