More hospitals take the lead as Foundation Residencies grow across Australia
A new cohort of Australian hospitals have shown their commitment to experiential pharmacy learning and training by earning provisional accreditation to host Foundation Residents through the SHPA Residency Program in 2018.
SHPA Chief Executive Kristin Michaels says the addition of nine programs at private and public sites in metropolitan and rural/regional locations, to programs across 30 sites already accredited to deliver Australia's first structured and formalised hospital pharmacy residency program, reflects the quality of practice and diverse capabilities of departments across the country.
‘After rigorous evaluation against the SHPA Residency Accreditation Standards, we are pleased to credential seven new sites, and two sites who first applied in 2016.
Coupled with the consolidation of three programs in South Australia, we have a 37-site program in 2018 that will be complemented, from 2019, by Advanced Training Residencies that are currently in development.
‘The quality and innovation on display across all applications was excellent, as was the willingness of sites to respond to feedback, supplying additional information throughout the evaluation process so they could coordinate and support future residents.’
Ms Michaels says supporting more residents to gain hands-on experience while strengthening the cumulative skill set of Australian pharmacy departments is part of SHPA’s vision to embed the Residency Program as an integral development stage for hospital pharmacists across country.
Alice Springs Hospital Director of Pharmacy Angela Young says attending the 2017 Residency Symposium demonstrated the willingness of sites to collaborate with each other, inspiring smaller and more isolated sites to get involved.
‘In all corners of regional, rural and remote Australia there are inherent hurdles in recruitment and training. However, after learning how the Residency Program was initiated in more remote hospitals, such as Tamworth, we entered the process and we’re thrilled we’ll be hosting a Foundation Resident in the Northern Territory next year.’
The sentiment was echoed In Victoria, where James Dwyer says SHPA’s guidance and advice after submitting for accreditation last year helped him enhance the training and skills of his team at Mercy Hospital in Melbourne, to achieve successful accreditation this year.
‘Through the 2016 review process we identified the need to train ClinCAT evaluators, provide additional training in clinical supervision, and pursue appointment of a clinical educator we will now be able to provide pharmacy residents with hands-on experience in SHPA expected practice areas as well as an elective opportunity in Neonatal Intensive Care.’
In Brisbane, Greenslopes Private Hospital Director of Pharmacy Anousheh Page says her team sought additional skill sets in clinical supervision and training in pursuit of delivering a residency program in 2018.
‘We’re delighted to be another private hospital pharmacy service accredited to offer SHPA Residency – we believe it shows how committed we are to supporting our staff and ensuring we continue to provide the best care to our patients’.
Four private hospitals are now accredited to deliver SHPA Foundation Residencies.
