SHPA congratulates Steve Morris on leadership of like-minded NPS MedicineWise

The Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia (SHPA) warmly congratulates Adjunct Associate Professor Steve Morris following his decision to step down as CEO of NPS MedicineWise in July 2021, after nearly three years at the helm.

SHPA Chief Executive Kristin Michaels says Adj A/Prof Morris’ leadership has coincided with a further strengthening of connections between the like-minded organisations.

‘On behalf of the SHPA Board of Directors and our members across the country, I thank Steve for his incredible dedication and creative vision for improving the quality use of medicines to improve clinician and consumer decision-making in health to improve both health and economic outcomes in Australia.

‘SHPA is a proud and long-standing member of NPS MedicineWise, and we are committed to our mutual organisational mission to improve and champion quality use of medicines and medicines safety whenever medicines are used, and wherever Australians receive care.’

Ms Michaels says a number of initiatives commenced under the leadership of Adj A/Prof Morris have direct implications for improving the care provided by hospital pharmacists as part of multidisciplinary medical teams.

‘NPS MedicineWise and SHPA have long held aligned strategic missions and our relationship has never been stronger, as we continue to play key roles on Value in Prescribing consortia including the bDMARDS program and Immunoglobulins products.

‘This strategic synergy was evident following SHPA’s Reducing opioid-related harm report (2018), after which the NPS MedicineWise Opioids Program was launched, along with continuing strong SHPA representation on the NPS MedicineWise’s annual National Medicines Symposium program, such is the overlap of expertise and patient focus.

‘Steve’s decorated career has also strengthened SHPA, with years of service as a member of the former Board of Directors, and his entertaining acceptance speech as recipient of the prestigious Fred J Boyd Award a highlight of Medicines Management 2019, the 45th SHPA National Conference.’

Adj A/Prof Morris, who has led NPS MedicineWise since mid-2018, will take up a new position in his home state of South Australia as CEO of Arthritis SA.
