Extension Seminar in Mental Health

The Extension Seminar in Mental Health will be delivered by a combination of a self-paced learning package covering the fundamentals of Mental Health conditions and therapeutic principles, followed by a one day live virtual seminar where this knowledge will be expanded upon and applied practically.

Participants will reflect upon overcoming common stigmas and challenges associated with Mental Health and the provision of equitable, holistic and consumer-centred care. The seminar will cover Mental Health conditions and pharmacological management options, including long-acting injections and clozapine. Aspects of Mental Health which are unique to the specialty and setting and specific psychotropic medicines information resources will be explored.

Participants will explore key concepts in greater detail in live case study sessions. There will be opportunity to engage in Q&A with expert presenters during the live seminar day.

The seminar will cover the following topics:

  • Psychosis over the lifespan  
  • Understanding inpatient psychiatry
  • Community mental health
  • Complex areas

The self-paced learning package will be available from Friday 15 March 2024. The live virtual component of this seminar will take place on Saturday 27 April 2024.

Please note: presentation recordings from the live virtual seminar will not be available. 

Target audience
The target audience for this seminar is pharmacists who work in the specialty practice area of mental health and are looking to extend or consolidate their practice.  This may include pharmacists who are more established practitioners in a specialist mental health area, those in their second year of the SHPA General Residency Program or those considering or starting a specialist residency.

 This activity has been accredited for 9 hours of Group-1 CPD and 4.5 hours of Group-2 CPD (for a total of 18 CPD credits), suitable for inclusion in an individual pharmacist’s CPD plan.

The accreditation number is S2024/27.

The program addresses pharmacist competency standards, including:

  • Standard 2.1.1 Respect the personal characteristics, rights, preferences, values, beliefs, needs and cultural and linguistic diversity of patients and other clients, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • Standard 3.1.1 Obtain relevant health and medicines information
  • Standard 3.1.2 Assess medication management practices and needs
  • Standard 3.1.3 Collaborate to develop a medication management strategy or plan
  • Standard 3.2.2 Provide primary care and promote judicious use of medicines
  • Standard 3.2.3 Dispense medicines (including compounded medicines) in consultation with the patient and/or prescriber
  • Standard 3.2.5 Provide counselling and information for safe and effective medication management
  • Standard 3.2.6 Facilitate continuity of care including during transitions of care
  • Standard 3.3.1 Undertake a clinical review
  • Standard 3.3.2 Apply clinical review findings to improve health outcomes
  • Standard 3.5.1 Review trends in medicine use
  • Standard 3.6.3 Support evidence based public health programs
  • Standard 5.1.4 Link practice and education

Cancellation policy

  • Membership rate is only applicable if you are a member at the time of the seminar. Should your membership lapse, or if you resign you will be invoiced for the difference in registration.
  • Cancellations must be made in writing.
  • Cancellations received before 6 weeks prior to the event will receive a full refund. Non-members will be charged a $50 handling fee.
  • Cancellations received between 6 weeks and 1 week prior to the event will receive a 50% refund of the registration fee.
  • Cancellations received less than a week prior to the event will NOT be refunded.
  • SHPA reserve the right to cancel a seminar or make changes to the program
  • If SHPA cancels or defers the event you will receive 100% of the registration fee but SHPA bears no responsibility for any costs incurred  (such as flights, accommodation, travel or expenses) or loss of income.
  • It is recommended that participants obtain adequate insurance cover for travel and accommodation.
  • Transfer of registration – as an alternative to cancellation your registration may be transferred to another member of your organisation or another event (if the chosen seminar is a higher cost you will be subject to further charges). A request MUST be made in writing to the Federal Secretariat prior to the event.
  • If you are unable to attend SHPA policy is that handouts can not be made available as ‘stand alone’ materials

Venue/Accessibility requirements

Catering/Dietary requirements

  • Please complete the necessary section when registering online. SHPA will notify third parties such as caterers/suppliers of any dietary requirements.
  • Whilst every care is taken to notify venues of dietary requirements, SHPA cannot guarantee completely allergy free meals, nor be held responsible for any adverse reaction. Any registrant who has notified SHPA of a dietary requirement should make themselves known to the seminar coordinator and/or venue staff upon their arrival.
  • Some dietary requirements such as Kosher meals may incur an additional cost which is the responsibility of the delegate. SHPA will notify you in advance.

Recording/Filming

  • Recording and/or filming is not permitted by registrants. Please note this event may be recorded for the SHPA website and/or photos may be taken for use in SHPA resources and publications.
  • Registrants are not permitted to record or film any part of SHPA events in any format including audio recording or video recording or through use of mobile devices for filming

  • Numbers are capped so book early to avoid disappointment. Please note the only way to guarantee a space is to register online. Please ensure you register prior to booking your flights and accommodation.
  • If you do not receive a confirmation email then you are not registered for the event and will not be able to be accommodated on the day of the event. If you are following up on registration please ensure you contact the Federal Secretariat at least a week prior to the event.
