Bass Coast Health (Wonthaggi Hospital)

Bass Coast is one of Victoria's most popular regions to live and visit with over 180 kilometres of spectacular coastline, beautiful wilderness areas, scenic hinterland and a laid-back lifestyle. This region boasts isolated beaches, lush farmlands, nature parks, historical landmarks and much more making it one of Australia's most diverse and unique areas. The region is 86,414 hectares in size (864 km2), and the official population was 32,000 people in 2015.

Bass Coast is the fastest growing population outside of the Metro region and has an ageing population, with 30% being 60 years plus.

Bass Coast Health is the major public healthcare provider within the Bass Coast Shire in South Gippsland.  It is an integrated health service providing a range of acute, sub-acute, Haematology and Oncology, ancillary medical, aged and ambulatory care services.

BCH is equipped to offer a broad range of specialist medical, surgical and obstetric services including orthopaedics, ophthalmology, gynaecology, cardiology, urology and rehabilitation.

The Hospital is located at the Wonthaggi campus and currently has Acute, Subacute and Surgical inpatient units.  The hospital has a busy emergency department and also offers Hospital in the Home, Oncology, Haematology and Medical Day Unit services.   The hospital has recently undergone a significant expansion, with a new Emergency Department, Operating Suite and Surgical Ward completed.

Intern program information

Bass Coast Health Pharmacy will have 2 pharmacy intern position available in 2025 (1 government funded, 1 hospital funded).

The Pharmacy Department has a staff base of 9 pharmacists and 5 pharmacy technicians, offering a range of services including:

  • Clinical Pharmacy services to Acute medical & surgical, Emergency Department, sub-acute GEM, Rehabilitation, palliative care, Hospital in the Home, Dialysis
  • Oncology/Haematology chemotherapy day unit
  • Provision of consumer medicines information & education activities to patients and patient groups, including falls prevention and pulmonary rehabilitation groups.
  • Provision of medicines education sessions to other health professionals
  • Outpatient dispensing

The interns will have the support of a Clinical Development Pharmacist  throughout the intern year and is encouraged to also undertake an Intern Foundation Program to support their learning.

The interns will be rotated through the acute and sub-acute clinical areas to allow integration into the clinical pharmacy service, development of skills, as well as regular dispensary duties.

The interns will have opportunity for participation with one of the local community pharmacies to consolidate OTC and clinical skills developed throughout the year.

Interns are encouraged to participate in multidisciplinary education events throughout the year to build rapport and partnerships with other professionals e.g. Doctors, Nurses, Allied Health. In addition, out Intern can participate in our new graduate support program which is facilitated by Bass Coast Health’s learning and development team.
