Campuses where pharmacy intern will work:

Benalla Health and Northeast Health Wangaratta

Benalla Health is a small rural health service providing hospital and health care to the Benalla community, with a focus on urgent and inpatient care, surgical services, maternity services and a diverse range of community health programs.  Healthcare is provided in close partnership with General Practitioners from three local GP clinics, as well as Visiting Specialists, and 4 local community pharmacies.

Around 200 km from central Melbourne, Benalla is the rural city at the gateway of beautiful northeast Victoria and High Country.  The 'Rose City', with famous gardens at Lake Benalla, it is a thriving cultural hub and internationally renowned street arts precinct, and is the starting point for the North East Victoria Silo Arts Trail. Winton Wetlands are a short drive away, and the Victorian alpine ski resorts are within easy reach for a day trip to the snow. Benalla is also home to the largest gliding club in Australia, with joy flights and flight training available near the hospital.  You’ll find there’s plenty to see and do on weekends, particularly if you have your own transport.

Intern program information

1 intern position is available in 2025 (1 DHHS funded)

Benalla Health’s Pharmacy Department is a team made up of 6 Pharmacists, 1 Intern, and 2 Pharmacy Technicians, with the intern training program being a joint effort between Benalla Health and Northeast Health Wangaratta.  The Pharmacy Intern assists (usually 2) pharmacists and the technician on duty, Monday to Friday, to provide clinical & operational pharmacy services to areas such as the Urgent Care Centre, Acute Ward (a mix of General Surgical, General Medical, Cardiac, Geriatric, Rehabilitation & Palliative Care), Operating Theatres and Day Procedures Unit.  Local GPs provide most of the medical, obstetric & anaesthetic services to patients at Benalla Health, so it’s important to quickly develop good working relationships with these doctors, as you’ll be working with them in the ward. Local community pharmacies provide PBS-subsidised medications to patients who are discharged from hospital, so strong relationships with community colleagues are also important, to ensure great communication and handover occurs at the transition of care.

Our internship is offered in partnership with Northeast Wangaratta (NHW), located just half an hour away by car or train.  Education & Training is provided during work hours, supported by credentialed Clinical Pharmacy Educators at each hospital.

The Benalla Health Pharmacy Intern participates in the NHW Weekly Tutorial Program along with 3 NHW Pharmacy Interns (including plenty of OTC and practice exams), via a mix of videoconferencing, and in-person one day each week at NHW.  Tutorials are facilitated by credentialed Clinical Pharmacy Educators based at NHW, and are designed to support and supplement the teaching & training provided by Benalla Health pharmacists.  The Benalla Health intern will spend a day each week, as well as several 3-week-long block rotations at NHW throughout the year, broadening their experience in medication management via rotations through clinical areas not available a Benalla Health.  During those rotations the intern works as part of the NHW Pharmacy Team, being responsible for delivering pharmacy services the Maternity, Day Stay Unit & Paediatric Units (under supervision).

Benalla Health offers intern pharmacists the opportunity to complete a Graduate Certificate in Pharmacy Practice during their internship, or for Monash Pharm students to complete their MPharm program, via the Intern Foundation Program offered by Monash University’s Faculty of Pharmacy.

Interns also learn with their hospital-based peers across the region, via regular scheduled videoconferences involving Northeast Health Wangaratta, Albury/Wodonga Health, Goulburn Valley Health & Echuca Regional Health Service.
