‘Unparalleled impact’: Professor Jason Roberts receives 2021 Fred J Boyd Award

Professor Jason Roberts was announced today as the 2021 recipient of SHPA’s prestigious Fred J Boyd Award, recognising the unparalleled impact that his support for the pharmacy profession and research-driven influence on pharmacy policy and practice has had on Australia’s healthcare system.

Professor Roberts, holds positions as a Consultant Clinical Pharmacist at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, Interim Director of the Herston Infectious Diseases Institute (HeIDI), Professor and National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Leadership Fellow at the Centre for Clinical Research at The University of Queensland and is a Scientific Consultant for Division of Anaesthesiology Critical Care Emergency and Pain Medicine at the University Hospital Nimes and University of Montpellier (France).

SHPA President Peter Fowler says Professor Roberts embodies the spirit of the Society’s most prestigious award.

‘Established in 1978 in memory of SHPA's Founding President, the Fred J Boyd Award is SHPA's most prestigious award, recognising a member who has made a significant contribution to hospital pharmacy in Australia through outstanding achievement impacting public health and patient care.

‘Professor Roberts is a most deserving recipient, and on behalf of the Board of Directors and members across Australia I congratulate him for his sustained exemplary service to Hospital Pharmacy through pharmacy practice, education, research and development.’

Over two decades of contribution through SHPA, Professor Roberts has served as Chair, Vice-Chair and Secretary of the Queensland Branch, and has convened SHPA national and branch seminars and workshops covering an extensive range of pharmacy specialties. He is currently serving as a member of SHPA’s Infectious Diseases and Critical Care Leadership Committees.

In his recommendation on behalf of the Queensland Branch Committee, SHPA Board member Paul Firman highlighted Professor Roberts’ world-leading contribution to research, particularly in the field of drug dosing and pharmacokinetics.

‘Jason is deemed an international authority on optimised dosing, ranked first among researchers into pharmacokinetics and therapeutic drug monitoring. His research has had significant impact on global healthcare, leading to practice change and guideline development, culminating in improved outcomes for patients.

‘He also supports the next generation of researchers, and the development of pharmacists and the pharmacy profession, through the supervision of PhD and Honours students.

‘Like all good leaders, while he always has a stance on important pharmacy issues, he encourages robust debate, exposing younger pharmacists and technicians to wider points of view.’

The longest serving Associate Editor of SHPA’s flagship journal, The Journal of Pharmacy Practice and Research (11 years), Professor Roberts has obtained more than $43 million in research grants, and his research has led to more than 530 publications in peer-reviewed journals across the globe. He has published two books, 23 book chapters, and is co-author of SHPA’s Standard of practice in infectious diseases for pharmacy services and Standard of practice in intensive care for pharmacy services.

Professor Roberts will formally accept the 2021 Fred J Boyd Award and deliver his oration at Medicines Management 2022, the 46th SHPA National Conference this November.
